Celebrating our 40th Anniversary at the #BCTECH Summit 2017

In celebration of our 40th anniversary delivering IT in BC, Avocette is a proud Sponsor of the upcoming #BCTECH Summit 2017 at the Vancouver Convention Centre from March 14th – 15th. Presented by the BC Innovation Council and the provincial government, the #BCTECH Summit “is the largest technology conference in British Columbia showcasing the province’s vibrant technology industry.”

The #BCTECH Summit will give attendees a deep look at how technology is innovating traditional industries, and the latest ideas and innovations fueling the BC economy.

#BCTECH at a glance.

This event is an extraordinary opportunity to gather BC’s entire tech ecosystem together. As Lindsay Chan, Director of the #BCTECH Summit and of Events for the BC Innovation Council explained to Geekwire, “the #BCTECH Summit brings together tech entrepreneurs, anchor companies, business leaders from traditional industries, investors, government and academia to establish new connections and to exchange fresh ideas and innovation to drive business growth.” It is also a place for people to discuss and investigate the solutions to major industry challenges provided by the tech industry.

There are more than 200 speakers slated to be at the two-day conference, providing attendees with a wealth of opportunity to hear provocative global thought leaders share fresh ideas and engaging stories.

Pre-summit events will be held on Monday March 13th, with #BCTECH on the Terrace open to the public from 5:00pm – 8:00pm on the Pacific West Terrace at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The lighting of the Olympic Cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza will officially kick-off the event as a celebration of the technology used to build the cauldron for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.

Last year’s inaugural event sold out. This year promises to be even bigger and, if it’s possible, better. See you there!

Inaugural Cherwell Users Group 2015

Cherwell Users GroupOn Thursday February 5th 2015, the City of North Vancouver graciously hosted the Inaugural BC Lower Mainland Cherwell Users Group. Avocette organized this group to bring together individuals from various organizations across the Lower Mainland that currently use Cherwell or are considering Cherwell implementation.

Cherwell provides industry leading IT Service Management (ITSM) solutions software, including everything from ITIL certified processes, a self-service portal, powerful dashboards and customizable reporting. Our organization has been a partner of Cherwell Software since 2013 and we have even implemented Cherwell’s solutions into our organization as well. The goal of this group is for users to come together on a regular basis to discuss how other organizations are utilizing Cherwell, to share lessons learned and to pose questions. The Users Group opens communication channels between Cherwell users so companies using Cherwell can take advantage of the collective Cherwell Knowledge and Experience that exists in the BC lower mainland.

We began the session by briefly explaining how we transitioned over a six month period from our existing home-grown ticketing and time tracking system, to implementing the new Cherwell system.

  • Phase One involved the adoption of Cherwell for all Internal Technology Support based incidents and requests, which assisted in pipe-cleaning any bugs or incorrect configurations. This was run alongside the existing system for several months to ensure that there was familiarity with the system, backups were working properly, training sessions held, and configuration data loaded and was validated.
  • Phase Two was the cut-over of all clients from the existing system to Cherwell over a single weekend. This cut-over included the manual migration of existing open incidents, advanced training sessions and communications to all staff, the migration of key reports in advance to ensure that we were still able to meet the clients’ needs and non-critical reports were scheduled for creation at a later date.

Following our implementation story, we began a round table discussion of other organizations’ experience with Cherwell, including daily use, functionality and current projects in the works. We had a diverse group of attendees including Municipalities, Post-Secondary Institutions, and Emergency Communications who provided some great stories and examples. Through the discussion, those considering implementing Cherwell heard first-hand, candid experiences including reasons why organizations ended up selecting Cherwell over rival software platforms.
